Olympian, Allyson Felix, talks Fitness, Style, & the beauty of YOU

Yesterday, in the wonderful world of Twitter, Shape Magazine gave it's followers a special treat... a chance to chat with track & field's queen of beauty, style, and of course SPEED...Allyson Felix. Miss Felix has some serious hardware to her name, including two silver Olympic medals, three gold World Championship medals (all in the 200 meters), and a gold from the 2008 Olympics as a member of the 4x400 relay team. All this and she's only 25 years of age. But she gets even more amazing, if you can believe it. Allyson is also a member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, an advocate for drug-free sport, and a huge inspiration to young girls everywhere, especially those in her Southern California community.

In yesterday's "twitterview" with Shape Magazine, Allyson Felix took the time to share some of her favorite workout tips. Here's an excerpt of my favorite parts. I hope her answers inspire your future workout efforts and encourage you to love yourself even when soaked in a good sweat..."STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL!"

SM: What are your favorite pre- and post-race snacks?
AF: Pre-race I keep it simple, grilled chicken or fish, possibly a salad. Post-race, pasta and a nice splurge dessert.

SM: What would be a splurge dessert for you?
AF: I love Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk

SM: Do you use energy/replenishment drinks before or after races?
AF: No energy drinks. I do use Gatorade G series. Love their products and the way they make me feel

SM: Aside from staying hydrated, do you have any other tips for running in the heat?
AF: Shaved ice, it sounds crazy. Shaved ice mixed with Gatorade reduces your body temp and keeps you feeling cool

SM: Do you have a go-to song to pump you up for a race?
AF: Beyonce's "Diva" always gets me in that 'ready to attack the world' mode

SM: Do you have an inspiring quote or mantra?
AF: I love Steve Prefontaine's quote, "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift"

SM: As you know, childhood obesity is a lingering problem in the US. How can we get our kids excited about fitness?
AF: I have a real passion for children, so I am very active in encouraging young people to take the PALA (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award) challenge. As an athlete, I feel sports are a great way for kids to have a lot of fun, be active, and learn discipline.

SM: Some girls are insecure about being "better than the boys" athletically. How do you respond to that?
AF: I train with the boys at the track/gym and it makes me faster. I think fast is beautiful. Embrace your beautiful!
SM: LOVE it!

SM: What are your favorite exercises to do outside of running?
AF: I enjoy Pilates, riding my bike and even taking out my rollerblades #NerdAlert

SM: Are there any moves/exercises you know you have to do but just hate?
AF: Core work can be really tough. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I know it will get my body right

SM: What do you do in terms of strength training?
AF: I lift weights with my strength coach 4 days a week and wish more women would add weights to their routine

SM: What would you recommend to a runner who is adding strength to their routine for the first time?
AF: Start slow and ease your way into strength training

SM: What advice do you have for our readers to achieve body confidence?
AF: Love you! There isn't a right or wrong way to look. Confidence is beautiful

SM: Your skin is flawless even though you probably swear a lot with all the training. Any tips?
AF: Thanks! I keep facial wipes in my workout bag at all times and put them to good use after every race/workout

SM: What's your go-to beauty product?
AF: I'm a lip gloss girl and I love Chanel's "Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss." You can't go wrong with it

SM: What do you like to wear while training?
AF: I try my best to look cute while working out. I love wearing long tights and a tank top. I try to throw a splash of color in all my workout outfits

SM: What do you find to be the best sports bra?
AF: I love this one from Nike: Pro Victory Compression

SM: What sneakers do you run in and do you rotate shoes?
AF: Nike Free has changed my running life. Love them! Yes, I rotate based on time of [training] season

SM: What do you do to get motivated on days you just don't want to workout?
AF: I really think about my goals. Doesn't matter if it's losing ten pounds, toning up, or winning Olympic Gold

SM: What songs are on your workout playlist right now?
AF: The new Beyonce and Adele albums.
